REGULATORY/ENFORCEMENT BODIES
- British Standards (BSI) The worlds first national standards-making body (NSB) and is number one in the world today. BSI provides publications and consults on new and existing standards of all types.
- Care Quality Commission Their aim is to make sure better care is provided for everyone, whether that’s in hospital, in care homes, in people’s own homes, or elsewhere. They regulate health and adult social care services, whether provided by the NHS, local authorities, private
- Department of Health and Social Care (DoHSC) Government department providing health and social care policy, guidance and publications It includes links to the National Taskforce on Violence Against Social care Staff and associated documents.
- Environment Agency (EA) The leading public body for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales to make sure that air, land and water are looked after by everyone in today’s society, so that tomorrow’s generations inherit a cleaner, healthier world.
- Equality and Human Rights Commission Parliament gave the Commission the mandate to challenge discrimination, and to protect and promote human rights. A catalyst for change and improvement on equality and human rights.
- Food Standards Agency (FSA) An independent Government department set up by an Act of Parliament in 2000 to protect the public’s health and consumer interests in relation to food. The FSA provides advice and information to the public and Government on food safety from farm to fork.
- Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Is the enforcing body for H&S matters for the UK. The website contains many links and a search facility for all sorts of useful H&S information.

- Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) The MHRA is now part of the Government Website Enhance and safeguard the health of the public by ensuring that medicines and medical devices work and are acceptably safe. Contains links to all their publications and other information.
- Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (DCLG) Replaced DCLG with a powerful remit to promote community cohesion and equality, as well as responsibility for housing, urban regeneration, planning and local government. Contains a huge amount of information that needs to be searched for.
- National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Is an independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on promoting good health and preventing and treating ill health.
- National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE) An NHS (Department of Health) website, NIMHE is responsible for supporting the implementation of positive change in mental health and mental health services. NIMHE is part of the Care Services Improvement Partnership, There are eight development centres,
- National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) Improving the safety and quality of care through reporting, analysing and learning from adverse incidents and ‘near misses’ involving NHS patients.
- NHS Protect An independent Division of the NHS Business Services Authority and has responsibility for all policy and operational matters relating to the prevention, detection and investigation of fraud and corruption and the management of security in the National Health
- Public Health England A body that protects the health and well-being of the population. Plays a critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in preventing harm when hazards involving chemicals, poisons or radiation occur.
- Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Is a well known charity offering all sorts of useful H&S resources such as education and training, publications, advice and events and covering most aspects of H&S.
